What are Chicken Fritters?
Chicken fritters are a type of fried food made with pieces of chicken, mixed with other ingredients such as flour, eggs, and seasonings. The mixture is then formed into small patties or balls and deep-fried until golden brown.
Chicken fritters can be served as an appetizer, side dish, or main course. They are often served with dipping sauces such as barbecue sauce, honey mustard, or ranch dressing.
Many people believe that chicken fritters were invented recently, but the Scots have been having them since the middle ages! And they've generally been eaten and enjoyed around Europe for hundreds of years.
And it's not difficult to guess why since they are the perfect snack to munch on and even work perfectly as a side dish. Trust me, you're going to fall in love with chicken fritters!
What Makes This Chicken Fritters Recipe Special?
This chicken fritters recipe is special because it combines the classic flavors of fried chicken with a unique twist. The fritters are made with a combination of chicken breasts, garlic, onion, and seasonings that give them an amazing flavor.
With large eggs as a binding agent and all-purpose flour to give them some structure, they are absolutely perfect when lightly fried in olive oil until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
What's best is that they're incredibly versatile in not just how you can serve them, but also what you can add to the chicken mixture! Feel free to experiment with some fresh herbs or cheese to add your own touch to them. I've mentioned some fun and interesting variation ideas in this post too.
Plus, kids absolutely seem to love the flavor and texture of these chicken fritters. They're subtle enough for all kids to enjoy yet packed with flavor that makes them want to keep coming back to them.
Trust me, this is the best Chicken Fritters recipe you're ever going to come across. And I'm sure you'll bookmark this post as soon as you give them a try!
What You Need to Make Chicken Fritters at Home
All you need are some simple pantry staple ingredients to make these delicious Chicken Fritters at home. Here's everything you'll need:
- Chicken: First of all, we'll need some chicken breasts to make these delicious fritters. You can also use chicken thighs if that's what you have at hand.
- Eggs: Next, we'll need two large eggs that'll not only add flavor and nutrition to your delicious patties but also help bind everything together while we're pan-frying them.
- Onion: We'll also be using one small yellow onion that'll add a ton of delicious flavor to our patties and really make all the flavors come together. Trust me, adding fresh, shredded onion is so much tastier than onion powder!
- Garlic: You'll also be needing some garlic cloves to elevate the flavor to the next level. Again, it really makes a difference to use fresh garlic cloves instead of garlic powder because it really adds a nice subtle yet prominent flavor in each bite that balances everything else out.
- Mayonnaise: To add richness, flavor, and make our chicken fritters tender, we'll also be using some mayonnaise in our chicken mixture.
- Mrs. Dash seasoning: This seasoning mix is one of my absolute favorites because it combines a bunch of incredible seasonings such as dried oregano, thyme, cayenne pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, lemon powder amongst other delicious spices and herbs.
- Salt and pepper: We'll also be using some salt and black pepper to season the chicken fritters to just the right level.
- Flour: To add structure and a delicious crispy flavor, we'll also be using some all-purpose flour in our chicken fritter recipe. If you're looking for a gluten-free or keto version, check out the variations section.
- Olive oil: We'll also be needing some olive oil to lightly fry our chicken fritters till they're perfectly golden brown.
How to Make Chicken Fritters (Step-by-Step)
Making these tasty chicken fritters is easier than you think! Here's what you need to do step-by-step to make them at home:
How to Prep Chicken for Chicken Fritters
Start by soaking clean chicken breasts in cold water for a couple of hours, and changing the water periodically. This is certainly optional, but it's my preferred way to cook meat while ensuring that it's thoroughly clean.
Cut all fat off the chicken breasts and rinse well, again. Place clean beasts into a strainer for excess water to drain.
Then cut the chicken into tiny cubes, about ¼”. Place chicken cubes into a large mixing bowl for easier mixing.
How to Make Chicken Mixture for Chicken Fritters
Next, add eggs, shredded yellow onion, crushed garlic, mayonnaise, Mrs. Dash seasoning, salt, and black ground pepper to the chicken.
Stir everything together, then add flour and mix it again. The mixture should thicken a little after adding the flour.
How to Cook Chicken Fritters
Now heat a large non-stick skillet or large frying pan over medium-low heat. That will be 3.5 if your stove is digital.
Add 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil to the pan. When oil gets hot, place one large ice cream scoop of chicken mix onto the pan and pat down to flatten into a fritter.
I like to cover the pan with a Frying Pan Splatter Screen Guard as the fritters splatter during sautéing, the guard contains most of the splatter. A regular lid traps the steam while a screen guard releases the steam but contains the splattering.
This is an optional step but I love the results with it; I've noticed that covering with a pan lid causes the fritters to water, release their juice, then later become too dry.
Saute fritters for 5 minutes on each side. I prefer sautéing a tad longer on a lower temp to ensure the meat is well done. Then flip the fritters over and saute for 5 more minutes.
Once done, place sautéed fritters onto a plate or cutting board lined with paper towels to soak in excess oil, then place the fritters onto a serving dish of your choice before transferring another set of sauteed fritters to the lined paper towel surface.
You may need to replace the paper towels every couple of batches as they get oily fast.
This step is optional, but I like my fritters to look beautiful without many dark burnt crumbs from previous batches stuck to them.
To get rid of those burnt crumbs, carefully move them to one side of the pan while tilting the pan a little so the oil runs down to the opposite side of the pan, then remove excess crumbs onto a side (waste) dish.
Add more oil to the pan as necessary and repeat the sautéing process.
Your Chicken Fritters are ready to be served!
Serving Chicken Fritters
Serve them right away (if you prefer them warm), with any of your favorite dishes. They taste incredible with Creamy Mashed Potatoes.
Don't forget to try them with other delicious recipes, such as Cucumber and Tomato Salad, some Homemade French Bread or Dark Rye Bread.
Recipe Variation Ideas for Chicken Fritters
These delicious Chicken Fritters are absolutely perfect as is, but if you're looking to customize the flavors to our personal preferences. Here are a few ideas you can try:
Cheese: You can also add your favorite shredded cheese to the chicken mixture! Try some mozzarella cheese or cheddar cheese as they go perfectly with the flavors in this dish. Parmesan is another great option!
Fresh herbs: If you love fresh herbs, you can add your favorite chopped herbs to the mixture as well. Fresh dill, chives, cilantro, and parsley are great options and you can add whichever one you love best.
Keto or gluten-free: If you're following a keto or a low-carb diet, you can substitute all-purpose flour with almond flour or coconut flour. And if you're on a gluten-free diet, you can go for corn starch. This will change the flavor and texture, but it'll still turn out incredible!
How to Store Leftover Chicken Fritters
If you have any leftover chicken fritters, you can easily store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Warm them in the microwave or on the stove top when you're ready to serve them if you want them warm.
Leftovers are great to pack in lunch boxes for the next day or even for small picnic sandwiches. You can even make larger patties for some tasty sandwiches! Whether you enjoy them warm or cold, you're going to absolutely love these fritters even the day after making them!
I won't recommend freezing these fritters since they won't be as crispy anymore. Since they're so easy to make, I recommend making them fresh!
