The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, New York (2024)

Welcome to Vogue’s first-ever spa guide—a compendium of the 100 best spas worldwide, pulling from the expertise of our global editors. There is a lot out there in the world of wellness, and we are here to sort the cryo from the cold plunge, the infrared light treatment from the IV infusion. Or if your path is a more holistic one—there’s something for you here, as well.

Why go here?

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental in New York City is located right at the heart of Columbus Circle. But while located in one of the busiest parts of the city, the spa is an oasis: The calming scent of—you guessed it—mandarin, combined with the exquisite Japanese art and Chinese furnishings create a transportive atmosphere. As just one of 38 Mandarin Orientals around the world, what you’ll experience at the Manhattan outpost is something of a sample of the kind of experience you’re likely to have wherever in the world you walk into a Mandarin Oriental.

What’s the vibe?

Situated on the 35th and 36th floors of the hotel, the horizon-skimming views are, undoubtedly, part of the appeal. Traditional offerings are, of course, available: your standard massage, facials, manicures, and private sessions with trainers. But there are distinct nods to the Asian origins as well: Staff members wear traditional Tang suits, guests must remove their socks and shoes before entering the spa, and only after consuming a cup of hibiscus tea can they pass through the wood doors. Once within, it’s a more opulent scene: Chaise lounges are lined with silk cushions, and chandeliers dangle from the ceiling. The Amethyst crystal steam room—said to induce mental peace, tranquility, and meditation—is a particularly appealing site within the complex.

The history?

The Mandarin Oriental has been a fixture in the New York hotel scene since 2003, and the spa has built up a reputation as one of the best in the city since then. Located in the north tower of the Deutsche Bank Center, the hotel spreads across 20 floors, while the rest of the space is reserved for private residences. New York designer Vivienne Tam, a longtime fan of the hotel, even designed a colorful bamboo fan that is displayed in the lobby. Additionally, the hotel spotlights Asian culture by hosting events like New York City’s annual Diwali Gala in their ballroom.

What should you try?

The Mandarin Oriental has five signature treatments, available at every one of its hotels, in addition to a unique treatment available in each city it operates. One of the most popular treatments is the “Time Rituals” treatment; while other offerings at the spa are around an hour, this is for those who want to get a longer and more holistic experience to restore the mind and body. During the session, therapists will work with guests to create an experience unique to them.

How environmentally friendly is it?

The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group prides itself on its efforts to protect sustainability. Gail Cowper, senior marketing and communications manager, and a member of the hotel’s sustainability committee, stated they’ve stopped using single-use plastic at all their properties worldwide. “Our spa also follows hotel protocols for waste and energy management, including a strong recycling program. From adding water flow restrictors for our showerheads, installing new insulation jackets for steam station Spence valves, and regular energy and system audits, we constantly work on improving our offerings with sustainability in mind,” Cowper said.

What else do we need to know?

Most guests of the spa are locals, but the hotel offers a Suite Wellness Retreat package for any tourists who want the full Mandarin Oriental experience on their next trip to New York. The package includes a two-night stay, an in-suite spa treatment, a curated private wellness session with a personal trainer, and a daily food and beverage credit to continue your wellness experience throughout your entire stay. It’s worth leaving time for the hotel’s signature afternoon tea special while taking in the views of Central Park. The menu changes every season.

Who can go?

The Mandarin Oriental is open to both locals and tourists everyday. With holidays being the busiest season, Cowper recommends booking 2–3 weeks in advance.
